The Prize (Genesis)
“The Prize: Genesis”, a unique re-interpretation of our original sculpture created for Thomas Hoblyn’s award winning showgarden at the Chelsea Flower Show back in 2010. This unique version, covered with intricately hand-engraved ferns, was made in 2022 and first displayed at Leeds Castle in Kent, UK, where Masters & Munn were guest artists for the ‘Flora and Fauna’ themed sculpture trail.
This is the only engraved version ever made of this full-size sculpture and the mould was destroyed immediately after the creation of this piece, making it the very last available version of ‘The Prize’. Unlike the only other two versions in existence (the original in electroformed copper and the second edition in cold cast copper), this unique version is made from cold cast bronze. This is a wall or hedge-mounted life-size sculpture suitable for indoor display and outdoor display (although we recommend protecting it from extreme weather).
This gorgeously sensual, classically themed sculpture was originally designed as part of a series of nine lifesize nudes, depicting different moments in the story of Voltaire's 'Candide', reflecting the hero's infatuation with the lady Cunégonde. His passionate desire for her makes it hard for him to focus on her as a complete person, and so he is teased with fleeting, objectifying fantasies of her body in fractured form as his obsession moves around her body until he finally unites with her. This particular pose represents the peak of young Candide’s fixation on the woman of his dreams, when she is completely beyond his reach. This new and completely unique version, known as ‘Genesis’, draws inspiration from the close connection of women to nature, the beauty of both the natural human form and the plant life we see around us every day, both forms of life unfurling and blossoming in the sunlight. It also forms a bridge between the ‘Cunégonde’ and ‘Fern’ collections of lifecast sculptures (please enquire for details about the rest of the collections).
